Prince Edward Island camping is a real treat. This wonderful island is extremely visitor friendly with a network of Visitor Information Centres and Island Welcome Centres covering the whole Island. A Prince Edward Island camping (also known as PEI camping) vacation takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine and the Island does not lack for entertainment.

There are tons of scenic drives and trails in PEI. For example, the North Cape Coastal Drive will take you through picturesque fishing and farming communities and breathtaking scenery by classic lighthouses. But the best part as you RV Prince Edward Island is that there are plenty of hospitable Prince Edward Island campgrounds to stop at along your journey.

Five Tips & Hints to RV Prince Edward Island

  1. Plan ahead and book your Prince Edward Island campsite online!
  2. PEI camping in the summer is ideal, with cool evenings, light breezes and low humidity. The island has summer temperatures as high as 86 degrees F, but generally are closer to 73 degrees. Winter temps are much colder with an average winter temp of 19 degrees F.
  3. If you live outside Canada and save receipts on goods you are taking home you may be eligible for a refund on part of the tax you paid. For information contact Revenue Canada at (800)959-1953.
  4. Cradled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island is a relaxing maritime province with a total population of only 138,000 residents. Its 2,000 square miles are filled with rural beauty, abounded seascapes and miles of sandy beaches.
  5. There are many ways to get to Prince Edward Island. Car Ferries depart from Caribou, Nova Scotia every hour and a half. The Confederation Bridge, a famous sight in itself, is a 13-kilometer engineering marvel, and connects New Brunswick to the town of Borden-Carlton. There are also daily flights from Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto. Buses and rental cars and RVs are also available.


As you RV Prince Edward Island in the northwest section you might want to spend a few days at the Jacques Cartier Provincial Park. The beach is supervised and the park is extremely family friendly. This is the approximate location where the first European visitor to come ashore in 1534. Jacques Cartier is said to have made the statement that this was, “the fairest land ‘tis possible to see!” Every July the park holds a celebration to commemorate the discovery on Rediscovery Day. The park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family including nature walks with the full time naturalist and children’s games. This is a great place to pull into a Prince Edward Island campground.

The town of Alberton is very close to the Jacques Cartier Provincial Park. The Alberton Museum is housed in the historic Alberton Courthouse which was built in 1878. This is the only courthouse of this style still standing on Prince Edward Island.

The Central Coastal Drive will bring your Prince Edward Island camping vacation to one of the most popular areas of the Island, the Green Gables Shore Region. This area was made famous over the last century by the Lucy Maud Montgomery book, Anne of Green Gables. The beautiful red sandstone cliffs and sandy beaches are spectacular. The area has more than 11 golf courses! And Cavendish is a family fun paradise. There are amusement parks, water slides and museums. Kayaking around Cavendish is great fun. Outfitters and tours are available for all experience levels. The area has an array of Prince Edward Island campgrounds for you to pitch your tent or park your RV.

The Red Sands Shore is where you will arrive on Prince Edward Island if you drive from the mainland across the Confederation Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world. The beautiful red sandy beaches are breathtaking. Just after entering the area you will find a day park with a wonderful supervised beach, the Chelton Beach Provincial Park is a great place to stop and play. Prince Edward Island campgrounds are close by if you feel like staying in the Red Sands Shore area for a few days before moving on to see the rest of this marvelous Island in your RV during your PEI camping vacation.

Cruise in your RV along the Points East Coastal Drive and enjoy the magnificent beauty and historic lighthouses that are open to the public during the summer. The Point Prim Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on the Island, constructed in 1845. The lighthouse has a grand height of 18.3 meters! You will find the Point Prim Lighthouse at 46’04”N, 62’59”W. The Points East Coastal Drive is well worth the trip especially if you love great scenery. This area has some real nice Prince Edward Island campgrounds for you to stop at along your way.
