Oklahoma Camping Offers Fun, Activity and Education

The town of Beaver in the Panhandle of Oklahoma is a great place to visit if you have an off road vehicle. Beaver is the doorway to Beaver Dunes State Park which is a 520-acre park with 300 acres of sand hills set aside for dune buggy riding. The park also offers hiking, fishing, camping and just plain old relaxing. Beaver is located on Beaver Creek. But Beaver's claim to fame is not the creek or the dunes. It is the “World Cow Chip Throwing Championship” which is held in April. This is a week-long celebration complete with Chili Cook-off, Poker Run and Parade. All of which build to the grand finale, Cow Chip Throwing. This is a fun event to include in the itinerary of your Oklahoma camping vacation.

Just outside the panhandle is Fort Supply Historic Site. This historic fort was established in 1868. Fort Supply played a major role in the history of the Oklahoma Territory. Lt. Col. George Custer’s 7th Cavalry was there for a time when the fort was newly established. The fort became Oklahoma’s first insane asylum in 1908. In 1988, Fort Supply was designated a Historic District by the Oklahoma State Legislature. The fort is being restored to its former grandeur of 1888.

Along the southern boarder of Oklahoma and Texas is Lake Texoma. This is one of the most popular recreation areas in Oklahoma. This massive lake is excellent for fishing, water skiing, personal watercraft, power boats and power sailing. The 89,000 acre lake on the Red River has two state parks, two wildlife refuges, fifty four US Army Corps of Engineers-managed parks, twenty six resorts and hundreds of great Texas and Oklahoma Campgrounds.
