Visit the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain. Take a ride on the Mark Twain Mississippi Riverboat. Enjoy “Mark Twain Himself” with veteran stage actor Richard Garey. And when you are ready for some outdoor recreation, head over to Mark Twain Lake in beautiful Mark Twain State Park for some fishing hiking, picnicking or swimming.

Missouri camping in the northwestern corner of the state offers beautiful scenery and the historical western town of St. Joseph. With over 50 listings in the National Register of Historic Places and several distinctive museums this city is a step back in time. Here you can see the exact location that Jessie James was shot in the back and killed by his cowardly partner, Bob Ford on April 3, 1882. The James home is a museum now with artifacts from Jesse’s grave on display. The Pony Express got its start in St. Joseph back in 1860. The Pony Express National Museum is located in the restored original stable used by the riders that sped through hazardous weather and terrain to deliver the mail across the country; riding horses approximately 250-miles in a 24-hour day. St. Charles is home to the Lewis & Clark Boat House and Nature Center. This educational facility is located beside the Missouri River at Bishops Landing. The Lewis & Clark Museum is located over the boat house and has exhibits concerning the Lewis & Clark Expedition, the Native Americans and various Missouri River habitats that were encountered along the journey. St. Charles was the temporary seat of government for Missouri in the early 1800’s. The first State Legislature met in the upper floors of a Federal-style brick building owned by the local merchants. This building has been restored and furnished as it would have looked in the mid 1800’s. It is located in the Nationally Registered Historic District with brick streets, gas lights and ten blocks of beautifully restored buildings.

The historic Frenchtown District is a wonderful part of St Charles history. The French Settlers founded this town village in 1769. This is perhaps the most unique of the four historic neighborhoods in St. Charles. It is beautifully preserved and has a wonderful museum. The Frenchtown Heritage Museum and Research Center is housed in a restored fire station in the heart of the Frenchtown Historic Preservation District.

Jefferson City is the capital of Missouri. And the Capitol building is as beautiful as the state itself. The Capitol Building offers free guided tours daily. On the first floor of the Capitol Building is the Missouri State Museum. This building, which rises 238 feet above the ground, is a magnificent example of Roman Renaissance architecture. The Missouri State Capitol is among the most beautiful capitol buildings in the United States don’t miss the opportunity to take the free tour. Historic Jefferson City has so many museums and historic sites that you probably will want to spend a few days in this area. There are plenty of nice Missouri Campgrounds in the area to park your RV or pitch your tent.
