Michigan Camping Offers Water Sports At Every Turn

By RA Manseau

RV Michigan and you will never be more than six miles from a lake or stream. The name “Michigan” comes from “Michigama” which is an Indian word for “Great Lake”. The name certainly fits the state. Michigan has 3,200 miles of Great Lakes shoreline; four of the Great Lakes touch Michigan. The state has more lighthouses than any other state in the United States of America. If you love water sports than a Michigan camping trip is perfect for you.

Detroit skyline, Michigan Camping Take a drive to the Keweenaw Peninsula on your Michigan camping trip to Copper Harbor. Copper Harbor is as into Lake Superior as you can drive. Here you can tour the Copper Harbor Lighthouse Museum and a real copper mine at Delaware Mine. From your base camp at a Michigan campground at or near Copper Harbor you might choose to enjoy kayaking, fishing, hiking and more. Rent an ATV and take an exciting off road adventure.

If you’re in the mood to get out on Lake Superior its self, take a cruise or take the local ferry out to the Isle Royale National Park. The island does not allow any wheeled vehicles including bicycles so it is pretty close to an unspoiled wilderness. The island would be a great place for some rough camping or just a beautiful day hike. Reservations are recommended especially in late July and early August. It may seem like a good idea to visit the island during the summer before the busy season but if you choose to do that take plenty of bug repellent.
