Maryland is one of the smallest states in the United States of America, yet it has recreational possibilities for the most avid outdoor sportsman, the history buff and the city folk in need of peace, quite and relaxation.

Antietam Bridge, Maryland Camping The western area of Maryland is full of recreational opportunities, such as hiking, fishing and whitewater rafting. The beautiful country side is postcard perfect at every turn. Hagerstown is nestled in this paradise. On your RV Maryland vacation, don’t miss this historic town. The original Hagar House is still standing and open for tours. The hose was built of uncut fieldstones that were carefully fitted together by Jonathan Hager in 1739. The Hager House is fully restored and furnished with period antiques.

Five Tips & Hints to RV Maryland

  1. Plan ahead and book your Maryland campsite online!
  2. Maryland has a humid, hot summer climate, but Maryland camping in the winter is quite nice due to its generally mild winters.
  3. Before you RV Maryland, visit the Maryland Office of Tourism Development website and find out about local events.
  4. If you're planning to do some Maryland camping, bring your swimsuit! Although Maryland's Atlantic coastline stretches just 31 miles, when you factor in all of the river and bay shores, the total mileage of shoreline climbs to more than 3,000 miles!
  5. Maryland is a great place for history buffs to visit, especially if you're interested in Civil and Revolutionary War history.


Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse Museum, Maryland Campgrounds Hagerstown is home to the Maryland Theatre. The astonishing elegance and charm of the theatre can only be matched by the artists that perform there. The biggest names in music and comedy perform on the same stage as the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. This building is astonishing and it would be a real shame if you missed the opportunity to take a tour or see a show. Tours are available at no charge but reservations are required. (Unfortunately, for concerts you must purchase tickets) For more information on the tours or performance schedules and tickets consult the Maryland Theatre website. The Hagerstown area has plenty of nice Maryland campgrounds for you to park your RV or pitch your tent.

Thurmont is a great place to make camp in a Maryland campground. The area around Thurmont is full of interesting and fun things to do. Among them, the Cunningham Falls State Park which is named after the gorgeous 78 foot water fall that flows into a rocky gorge. The falls is located in the parks William Houck Area. Another great place to take the kids is the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo. The Zoo has over 450 exotic animals. This wonderful zoo is open from the first day of spring through October. The Thurmont area is full of great fun things to do, there are miles and miles of hiking trails, and lots of Maryland campgrounds to place your base.

If you want to experience the history of the United States while Maryland camping, Greenbelt is one of the places to visit. This town is a reminder the 1930’s. The town was constructed to provide work for the unemployed during the Great Depression. It still has the wonderful parks and playgrounds, the man made lake and most of the original buildings. The Greenbelt Museum has the history of the town well displayed.

One of the best reasons to RV Maryland is right next door. Washington D.C. is just across the state line. You can camp just minutes away from the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Memorials to the wars fought by U.S. service men and women, the United States Capitol and the White House. From the numerous Smithsonian Museums to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the museums that surround the Washington D.C. Mall are incredible and educational.

boardwalk in Ocean City, RV Maryland Travel up the coast of the Chesapeake Bay and visit Annapolis. This historic city is home to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis. This city is rich in maritime history. During the day there are plenty of museums, galleries and historical sites to visit. In the evening you can go to the theatre and enjoy the ballet, opera or symphony.

As you leave Annapolis, cross over the Chesapeake Bay and RV Maryland on the Delmarva Peninsula. Ocean City is on Maryland’s east coast. This is one of the premier destinations for vacationers on the east coast of the United States. This year round resort has approximately ten miles of beach front and 3 miles of boardwalk. Around 8 million visitors come to Ocean City each year for the sun, the beach, the water slides and the amusement parks. For others the city is a place to go for parasailing, surfing, kayaking and golf. This is truly a giant playground for the whole family. Maryland camping near Ocean City will not be boring.

Maryland may only cover 12407 square miles but it has more to see and do than many places twice that size. A Maryland camping vacation will not disappoint.
