Black River
Unspoiled stretch of river with sandy bottom and good water quality and flow cuts through hill country in the western part of the state. High, sand banks, wooded shores and occasional limestone bluffs. Very little cultural intrusion; aside from village of North Bend, only about a dozen dwellings are visible from the waterway. Counties: LaCrosse and Jackson. Length: 56 miles. Location: From confluence with Mississippi River to Black River Falls Dam.
Chippewa
An excellent, scenic canoe trip with generally slow water and few rapids in western Wisconsin hill country. Many sand bars and islands in the channel. Near the mouth, the country flattens to a broad floodplain interspersed with forests and farms. Fair to good fishing. Counties: Peppin and Dunn. Length: 38 miles. Location: From confluence with Mississippi River to Eau Claire-Denn county line.
South Fork of the Flambeau River
Canoeable river with mostly easy water and some rapids flows through generally wild, forested watershed and a portion of Chequamegon National Forest. Good muskie and walleye fishing. Counties: Sawyer, Rusk and Price. Lengths: 32 and 26 miles. Location: From confluence with Flambeau River to S.R. 13 south of Park Falls and from Three Mile Creek to Round Lake.
Fox River
Slow moving river that was a major route across the state for early explorers, fur traders and settlers flows through some lakes and the greater Green Bay, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha metro areas. Many historic sites in upper river area and around Green Bay. Agriculture to the water's edge in many places. Counties: Ontogomie, Brown, Kenosha, Racine and Waukesha. Lengths: 15, 26 and 33 miles. Location: From Kankana to DePere; from Wilmot to Waterford Dam; and from Waterford to Waukesha.
Wisconsin River
The largest river in the state crosses an unglaciated, driftless area of hills and bluffs as it flow from its headwaters near Northern Michigan to the Mississippi River. Counties: Marathon and Lincoln. Lengths: 22 and 23 miles. Location: From Merrill to Wausau and from Wausau to Marathon's south county line.
Wolf
Popular canoe route with outstanding seasonal walleye and white bass fishing flows through farmland and forest with some extensive swamps. Generally good water quality. Counties: Outagamie, Wampaca and Shawano. Length: 41 miles. Location: From County Road P two miles north of Shioctin to Shawano.

Arbutus Lake
An 839-acre lake in west-central Wisconsin. Located just north of Hatfield, off Hwy. 95 and CR J. Favorite catches: northern pike, walleye, bass, panfish and catfish.

Balsam Lake
A 2,054-lake in northwestern Wisconsin on the eastern side of the town of Balsam Lake. Favorite catches: northern pike, walleye and largemouth bass.

Bois Brule River
This 50-mile river flows north through the Brule River State Forest to Lake Superior in northwestern Wisconsin. Favorite catches: brook, brown & rainbow trout and salmon.

Castle Rock Lake
A 13,955-acre lake in central Wisconsin. Located north of Mauston off I-90/94 & CR G. Favorite catches: walleye and panfish.

Eagle Lake

Lac Court Oreilles Lake
A 5,039-acre lake located about 10 mi. S. of Hayward via Hwys. 27 & K. Favorite catches: muskie, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and panfish.

Lake Michigan

Petenwell Lake

Puckaway Lake

White Lake

Lake Winnebago

Lake Wisconsin

Chequamegon National Forest
This national forest covers nearly 850,000 acres in northwestern Wisconsin. The area contains several highlands with bluffs and rock outcroppings providing scenic overlooks, forests of hardwoods and pine, and many lakes, rivers and streams. About 200 miles of trails are provided, including a 60-mile completed segment (between Drummond and Copper Falls State Park near Mellen) of the uncompleted 3,200-mile North Country National Scenic Trail (from New York's Adirondacks to the Missouri River in North Dakota) and a completed 40-mile section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (a 1,000-mile uncompleted trail within Wisconsin that will follow the end moraines of the most recent glaciation). "400" State Trail
An easy, multi-use 22-mile trail paralleling Baraboo River in southern Wisconsin. The northern trailhead is at the Commons, a downtown park in Elroy, which is the hub of 3 major multi-use trails: "400", Elroy-Sparta and Omaha trails. The southern trailhead is at Reedsburg, 15 to 20 miles from I-90/94 and Wisconsin's largest tourist area of Wisconsin Dells, Lake Delton and Baraboo. The trail was developed with packed limestone screenings and plank floored bridges on an abandoned Chicago-Northwestern Railroad grade. Wetlands, sandstone bluffs and rolling croplands are characteristics of the terrain. For more information, phone (608) 275-3214.

Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area
A 655-acre day-use recreation area in northwestern Wisconsin with 8 miles of hiking trails, just N of I-94 on Hwy. 40, near Rusk. There's a 2-mile nature trail with interpretive markers and a 60-foot observation tower. Wildlife in the area includes deer, fox, badger, turkey, hawks, waterfowl and songbirds. The Hoffman Hills SRA also manages the 14.5-mile Red Cedar Trail which shadows the Red Cedar River south of I-94. For more information, phone (715) 232-2631.

Kettle Moraine State Forests
Rolling hills, a wooded landscape and numerous lakes characterize the scenery. There are two units in southeastern Wisconsin. The 29,000-acre Northern Unit offer 72 miles of hiking trails; while the Southern Unit offers 73 1/2 miles of hiking trails. Wildcat Mountain State Park
A 3,500-acre park in southwestern Wisconsin, just south of the town of Ontario. Three marked hiking trails, totalling 3.9 miles, wind through high ridges and deep valleys. The Hemlock Nature Trail goes by the Kickapoo River and up to the summit of 1,220-foot Mt. Pisgah. The Old Settler's Trail goes to the top of Wildcat Mountain and through pine plantations on rolling hills. Much of Wildcat Mountain is a wildlife refuge. For more information, phone (608) 337-4775.

Willow River State Park
A 2,843-acre park in western Wisconsin at Hudson. Eight miles of looped trails traverse pine and mixed hardwood forests, meadows and rolling hills and go by Little Falls Lake and dam, Willow Falls, and settlers' graves. For more information, phone (715) 386-5931.

Cave of the Mounds
