Northbend rail trailRail Trails

Two long-abandoned stretches of railroad have been converted into some of West Virginia's best hiking and biking trails

From the pages of Camping Life Magazine

When the railroads unraveled earlier in the 20th century as the dominant means of transporting goods across the United States, thousands of miles of track were abandoned. Left to rust for decades, the iron ribbons of many lines have since been removed and recycled. However, a number of the routes traversed by big locomotives in bygone days are once again bustling with activity. No, there's not a railroad revival underway. Instead, the old rail beds have been converted into wide, gently sloped trails — providing recreational access to some of the most scenic regions in the nation.

Mark...My Words
By Mark Nemeth

Hi, all!
A mixed bag of questions this month: tires, brakes, appliances, propane tanks, and triple-towing. Have a great spring, and keep those questions coming! Email your questions to woodalls@escapees.com.

Hi, Mark!
I consider myself a future full-timer in a 5er. I read somewhere in the Escapees Forum that a "must have" is something that can't be added later and must be part of the original equipment of the RV. Anything that can be added "after-market" you can leave out of the original purchase and try living without until your experience confirms that it must be added. I have a pretty settled conviction that disc brakes are needed. They don't fade as much on long downhill grades. You get my thought, I'm sure. My only question is whether it is best considered a necessary part of the 5er's original equipment or whether it, too, can be something you figure on adding to your rig after experience tells you that it really, truly is better than drum brakes. I write this because…

RVing with your pet
By Julee Meltzer

Barking while Away

Does your little munchkin bark soulfully when you leave? Do you assume, he just stops once you have driven away from the RV? Well, you are most likely wrong. One of the biggest problems with dogs camping and RVing is barking while away.

Not too long ago, I was in a campground where some people had a menagerie of pets in their RV. They had dogs, cats, and large and small birds. Now, the sound of the large birds squawking was bad enough, but every time one of the birds squawked, it would start the dogs barking. And, to make matters worse, the people left for the entire day to go sightseeing. The woman next to them was close to tears when I saw her up at the office complaining. Unfortunately, because the people were gone for the day, there wasn't much the campground staff could do, except to ask the upset woman to change sites.

It's Steadyfast, when stability counts

It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, the faulty mousetrap that inspires a better one, and it was frustration with a seemingly irreparable shaky floor in his fifth-wheel that changed Paul Hanscom's path from retiree to inventor.

His product? Steadyfast Stabilizing Systems designed for fifth wheels and travel trailers.

A Winter Surprise

When we first started our camping adventures we had a pick up camper with a potty. My inlaws wanted to borrow it the end of one summer to go up north into Mass. and Maine to see the changing of the leaves…We all lived in Florida at the time and they came and picked up the camper. After a short checkout we showed them how to dump the potty…It had a plunger inside that you pulled up to dump the black water…Only thing was once you pulled it up there was no way to push it back down to stop the dumping until it was empty…
