I was wondering if any body has tried to make there own Macerator out of a Garbage disposel. It hads a nice big opening and I'm sure it would chew everything up. My concern would be if it would pump the stuff away. Any thoughts.

Interesting question. As a Former Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Supervisor we had much the same problem at times, on a much larger scale, with pumps and "material grinders".

There use to be, and probably still is an item called a "Muffin Monster", that was used to grind items that wouldn't pass through a pump or would plug the pipes. The probem always was whether to put it on the suction side of the pump and take the chance of "air locking" the pump (because the gpm of the pump is more than the grinder can process) or put it on the discharge of the pump and risk plugging the pump because the grinder was a restriction to the pump. Thus the reason for the development of macerator pumps that essentially grind and pump, the "best" of both worlds.

Now that I hae "outed myself" as what I did in a former life I have always wondered what was so bad about cleaning toilets, based on what I one time did for a living!

Never saw one like that it looks nice. Can you leave it hooked up so you can drain the grey water all of the time. Than turn it on when you want to pump out the Black water. Thanks.

Why would you want to drain the gray water all the time? It is always best to drain black water first and then let the gray water wash out the hose and piping........

I find the sewer solution to the job just fine and a lot less messy than just draining.

Just installed my macerator this evening. About an hour. It works great. I can hook the garden hose up to back wash when done.
It has tremendous pressure and will save me a lot of trouble.
It is currently on sale at CW . I bought the one that simply twists onto the output coupler. No leaks and it emptied in about two minutes.
The neighbor kids better not get in a water fight with me this Spring. They could be in for a shock if I hook up the sprayer to the pump. HE he he.

Only kidding, I use my pressure washer, I can get em clear across the street with that.

My DIY $10 sewer solution is discribed on thread. 11/2/04 search for "I built a homemade "Sewer Solution"". My reply is the last in the string at #111 and discribes a DIY like the picture in Mcmaster-Carr..see the post #45 by "kenneth" showing the drawing of a commercial one. I use it to, not send the blackwater along but to use the 'power syphon gun' to pull the sewer water to the in ground clean out drain. Slow but works well at home. $10 to build the 3/4" PVC 'jet power syphon' and another $60 for the hoses.
