Why take the beaten path? If you're traveling southern Wyoming between Laramie and Cheyenne, skip Interstate 80 and take the Happy Jack Road. You might not get to your destination as fast, but the scenery certainly is worth it.
1. Laramie - Starting Point
Nestled in a valley at the base of the Snowy Range Mountains, Laramie provides ample supplies of both scenery and winter skiing. When summer comes around, go hiking and biking on a seemingly endless network of trails. Crystal-clear alpine lakes and mountain meadows await adventurers.
2. Curt Gowdy State Park - 24 miles, 30 minutes
Named after a famous sports broadcaster, Curt Gowdy State Park features granite towers, rocky soils and timbered slopes for hikers. During winter, it's great for cross-country skiing. Go fishing in the park's reservoirs for brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon.
3. Cheyenne - 25 miles, 30 minutes
Cheyenne wears its wildwest heritage on its sleeve, and this charming town has the historical sites and landmarks to back it up. Get a feel for early west rail travel with a visit to the Big Boy Steam Engine or tap your boot toes at the Big-O-Wyo Ranch Horse Barn Dinner. A host of side trips invite folks seeking to explore the surrounding scenery.
