RV School Course of Study

The school’s main course is a two-day private training course, four hours per day.

On the first day, topics covered include things like using mirrors when driving and backing; turning and cornering; proper use of engine, gears, and brakes; and starting, stopping and backing. Other subjects include defensive driving, judging height and width, and hooking up and disconnecting tow vehicles. Everyday challenges like freeway on- and off-ramps, narrow single-lane roads and lane control, coping with hills and campground maneuvering are also covered.

The two-day course involves lessons with the owner’s RV; another driver, such as a spouse or travel companion, can participate. A completion certificate is awarded. Some insurance companies offer discounts to those who complete the course.

Reed has also developed a training program of seminars presented at RV shows as well as classes for those who wish to refine and expand their driving skills. This includes single-day mini-lessons Reed’s two-day course costs $355 for one person and $530 for two people. Mini-lessons start at $225. If you belong to one of many RV or automobile clubs, the prices are less ($325 and $480, respectively; mini-lessons are $200, $275). This is probably a whole lot less than the necessary repair costs, if a driver were to back their rig into something.

Sites From Coast to Coast

In order to offer the courses more widely than at just the original location in Ontario, Calif., the RV School added more instructors. It now provides RV-driver training in California, Oregon, Florida, Arizona and some other locations.

Reed is extremely careful with his selection of instructors, who must have extensive backgrounds in commercial truck- and bus-driving classroom instruction, as well as behind the wheel. They must be able to teach driving techniques in all of the various types of recreation vehicles. Patience is very important.

Finally, the instructors need to have a love for the RV lifestyle. Now, one of these instructors, Dennis Hill, has purchased the RV School and plans to continue its training, but from a base in Texas. Incidentally, the school is looking for qualified instructors.
