It started on the first of February, when I gave birth to a little girl named Rosie. Being my first child, I understand that I am destined to suffer from a wide array of maladies attributed to being a first–time mother. Evidently, women who have already had children take everything in stride. Anyway, while I was staying in the hospital, I had a lot of time to think about what it would be like to live in a motorhome with two large dogs, two bad cats, and a brand new baby. For starters, how would the dogs react to the new baby? I had heard stories about over–protective dogs and didn't want to come home to an emotional hotbed of simmering jealousy and snarling resentment. In addition, our two German Shepherd dogs had virtually no experience with small children – let alone a tiny newborn. Would they accept the baby as a new addition to the family or would they slip into the calm mindset of a patient predator waiting for the chance to make their move? Differing circumstances abound for different RVers, but by and large, every owner must at some point in time, go through the yearly ritual of what is termed the "spring shakedown." My Words*** Hi Folks, I hope you are enjoying this great RVing weather we've been having! I'm looking forward to my trip in June to the Escapees' big rally and birthday bash in Gillette, WY. This will be my first long trip in my newly restored Class C, and I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe I'll see you out there on the road! Remember, keep those questions coming! Dear Mark, I have a 1994 Minnie Winnie and have noticed a soft spot in the floor in front of the bath area sink/vanity. While I have some do–it–yourself skills, I want to know just a little about what I am going to get myself into if I peel the carpet back and attempt to repair the floor. I suspect that I can cut the soft or rotted area away and patch a piece of marine plywood in place. Since this may be over the top of a holding tank I was wondering what caused the problem, and is this going to be a simple fix or should I leave the task to a professional? Thanks, Paul Continue Reading at http://www.woodalls.com/email/diamondnewsletter/0508/questions_landing.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- ***Cooking on the Road*** Chicken In A Dutch Oven The delicate flavor, the economy and the wide variety of ways in which chicken can be served make it a popular dish with campers. The following recipes for chicken make good use of the Dutch oven. DUTCH ROAST CHICKEN 1 4–pound roasting chicken 1/4 cup chicken broth or water 3/4 cup cream (or half and half) 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper Preheat Dutch oven over hot coals. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Fasten body and neck cavities with skewers. Heat butter or margarine in oven and brown chicken on all sides, sending with breast–side up. Add broth (or water) and cream. Place lid on oven and cover lid with hot coals. Cook for about 1 hour, or until tender. Remove chicken and set aside on platter. Skim fat from cooking liquid; stir egg into small amount of cooking liquid and blend with remaining liquid in oven. Cook over coals until thickened. Pour gravy over chicken and serve hot. Basically, they reduce the temperature of intake air by capturing cooler air from outside the hot engine compartment. Cold air is denser than warm, humid air and thus can hold more oxygen for better combustion, resulting in enhanced performance. This translates to more horsepower and torque with the same or decreased fuel consumption. Aftermarket cold air intake systems also usually have larger diameter intakes compared with stock intakes, so they can take in more air, again providing more oxygen for better combustion. Designing a direct airflow path and providing smoother interior surfaces can help reduce air resistance for increased airflow. Even some not–so–newbies to RV camping get cold feet every once in a while, especially when it comes to maneuvers like backing a trailer into a smallish campsite. If you're unfamiliar with trailer towing, don't feel overwhelmed. With a little practice it really isn't that difficult. In fact, with a properly set up trailer and tow vehicle, you'll hardly notice you are towing until you get into tight spaces. Just keep in mind that you are now driving a train that's a lot longer and heavier than it was before.
