  Dead Cat

My in–laws take their cat (Smokey) with them where ever they go and the cat likes to get up on the dash and sleep with all four paws straight up. A lot of people think he is dead or stuffed. We went out to Wisconsin for the air show and during the night the cat put the electric window down and got out. Well this is a cat that has never been outside before and we all assumed we would never see him again. Guess what… He was found two campsites over from us under a patio mat and lying next to him on top of the mat was a large dog… We were all so glad to have Smokey back but I think Smokey was even gladder to be home. My in–laws now keep a pillow over the window switch so that this will never happen again.

  Weather or Not?
We remind our Diamond Club members that although the RVers along the east coast are still watching the 2006 hurricane season that runs through November, all RVers need to be prepared to protect their life and property if the need arises.

RVers can monitor environmental and weather-related situations on local TV and radio stations, the TV Weather Channel and the Internet. For those using computers, we recommend you add www.noaa.org, www.nws.noaa.gov/, and www.weather.com to your Favorites list to obtain current status and information on hurricanes and bad weather situations.

In addition to the local radio stations, both XM and Sirius satellite radio provide traffic and weather information for selected geographic areas.

RVers with access to the Internet can easily retrieve up–to–date information about all types of weather and environmental events anywhere in the country.

Do you have questions about RV technical issues, the RV lifestyle or RV's in general? Ask Mark!

Hi Folks! This month, I've got some leveling and parking–the–rig answers to share with you, and a couple of tidbits of general interest. Thanks for all the questions you've sent in! Remember, I can only answer selected questions in the newsletter… I can't send you a personal response.

Happy Trails!!
Mark

Dear Mark,
I own a 1996 Scamper TT. Every time I plug into house current, the inverter makes noises as if it is struggling to keep up with the demand. I'm a very conservative power user, if I run lights it's usually only one at a time and of course the fridge is a constant. Could the unit be to small for the 25' TT.?

Mary, New Port Richey, FL.

Mark says…
If you have a 3–way refrigerator, are you running it on 12v? That draws a huge amount of current! Make sure it's set to AC or Propane and see if that helps. If you don't even have a 12V setting on your fridge, then all that doesn't apply to you. Some older converters will hum quite loudly even when operating properly. That hum doesn't mean it is failing, but it can be a nuisance. Some converters have a built–in fan, and if it wears out, it can make a lot of noise. Also, remember that when you first plug in, especially after a period of dry camping, the converter will be working harder to charge your house batteries. Speaking of batteries, are yours in good shape, and have you checked the water levels recently? Tired old batteries will really put a load on the converter. If it continues to worry you, have a qualified service person look it over.
If everything checks out, but the old converter is still noisy, you can get rid of the noise by replacing the old converter with a newer, solid state unit. They are a lot quieter!
