Lockout!
My wife and I, along with our two young Cocker Spaniels were returning from Washington through Idaho and Montana to our home in Cheyenne, WY in early May. We got caught in a heavy spring snowstorm in Bozeman, Montana, so we stopped at a campground for the night. We were backing our 5er into a space, and I got out to make sure we were lined up properly. My wife got out and checked the other side, and our puppies jumped up on the door armrest to see where we were going. Yep, you guessed it – they hit the power locks! The pickup was running, headlights, defrosters, and wipers going, and we were locked out! My wife's spare key was in her purse – in the truck! So, with the help of the campground host to find a local locksmith, we were reunited with our beloved puppies after only 40 minutes and 65 dollars.… The moral of the story: Keep a hide–a–key available!

Do you have questions about RV technical issues, the RV lifestyle or RV's in general? Ask Mark!
Thanks to all of you for the many great questions you have emailed in! I wish there was time to respond to all of you in person, but for now, I'll only be able to answer selected questions here in the newsletter.
I've decided to group similar questions together and answer them in batches. We'll see how it goes! This month, the topic is Generators.
Dear Mark,
My 1986 MiniWinnie has a genset problem. After considerable difficulty tracking down the genset manufacturer [Kohler] and getting a new voltage regulator installed, the power to the inside has a steady and rhythmic fluctuation from about 80 to 110 volts. The genset seems to run steady without a load. What is happening here?

Mark says…
Does the generator's speed (RPM) seem to fluctuate up and down when the voltage fluctuates? If so, then the governor may need adjustment. That's the device that maintains the generator's speed at a constant 1800 or 3600 RPM, regardless of the load applied. A carburetor that's gummed up or out of adjustment can cause the generator's speed to fluctuate like this. If you can get a service manual for the unit, doing the adjustments is a fairly simple task.
If the generator seems to be running at a constant speed, but you are still seeing the voltage fluctuations, then there is probably a problem with the voltage regulator or other generator internal components (brushes, slip–rings, windings). This may be one of those times you need to take it to a service place for diagnosis.
