RVsAmong the best locations for tent camping is our national parks system. The system was created under President Teddy Roosevelt in 1916 and had 358,000 visitors. In 2008, there were nearly 275 million visitors to our national park system.

The No. 1 national park in terms of visitors is the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, which has more than twice as many as the Grand Canyon. The shear vast size of the Great Smoky Mountains makes it an ideal place for tent camping, especially if getting away from it all is your goal.

Joining the Great Smoky Mountains and the Grand Canyon among the top five in visitors, are Yosemite (3), Olympic and Yellowstone. The next five, in order, are Cuyahoga Valley (no tent camping available), Rocky Mountain, Zion, Grand Teton and Acadia.

All of these national parks offer great chances to experience tent camping. While you may enjoy getting very close to nature, it’s still wise to be prepared for the great outdoors. At the very least, make sure you have a sleeping bag that is built to endure any weather you may encounter. Check out the latest guide to sleeping bags courtesy of Camping Life Magazine.
