Even Your Clothes Can Be Green
From the pages of Camping Life Magazine
Clothing made from bamboo fibers? Sure why not? Bamboo-derived clothes can be very “green,” even if they are another color. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable natural fibers on earth, grown without pesticides, naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, breathable, and absorbent. The uniqueness of bamboo being a natural fiber combined with its performance properties makes an ideal fabric for active wear. We found a company called Naturally Bamboo that is a manufacturer of clothing and accessories made from bamboo fiber.
The mission of Naturally Bamboo is to offer comfortable and functional apparel made in an ethical fashion, which fits perfectly in the world of green camping. Naturally Bamboo has manufactured certified organic bamboo/organic cotton clothing since 2007. The summer 2010 apparel line will include men’s and women’s lifestyle tops, graphic tees, skirts and dresses. The company uses only bamboo that is certified organically grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers by the OCIA and USDA.
The advantages of bamboo fiber products are many and include:
Its breathable structure keeps you cool and won’t stick to you.
It makes an excellent baselayer to provide warmth in cool weather.
It’s naturally anti-bacterial so clothes don’t get stinky.
It rapidly absorbs moisture and dries in half the time as cotton.
Bamboo is rapidly renewable and can grow over a foot a day.
Naturally Bamboo is a 100-percent female-operated and owned company based in Mankato, Minnesota. It’s headquarters is run by wind energy, and it’s a fair trade company, paying its sewing operators fair wages.
