Types of Tents to Consider Buying for Your Next Family Camping Trip

By Renee Nicole

Tent camping can be lots of fun, a great way to spend quality time with the family, and is an excellent excuse to see the country. But when going on a family camping trip, you need a good tent that suits your family’s needs. There is a huge variety of tents out there. Some are a large, single room. Others have chambers of varying sizes that connect. Some are a large room with a privacy divider down the middle. Let’s take a look at some of the options out there.

4-Person Family Tent Review

Four man tents are good for a small family, especially with young kids. It keeps everyone close and within eyesight. They can comfortably fit 4-6 people and are generally around 6 feet tall at their highest point. Four person tents offer space, comfort, and peace of mind. They are generally very quick and easy to set up and take down, something the family can do together. Some tents even come with a removable divider which is great for a little added privacy. These tents can range in price from as low as $50 all the way up to $500 depending on the brand, quality, and features.

6+ Person Family Tent Review

These bigger tents are great for large families or groups. They can fit anywhere from 6-12 people depending on the size. The monster sized tents are especially great for spacious camping, big groups, and very big families. They offer living space as well as sleeping space which can be a haven from bad weather. These tents also usually come with removable dividers for added privacy. They range from $100 for the smaller or less expensive brands all the way up to $800.

Multiple Room Family Tent Review

While many of the larger tents have removable dividers, there are tents that have actual separate rooms. These are great for family camping trips with either older children, another couple, pets, or just to have a living space and a sleeping space. An advantage to having built separate rooms is that one section can be closed off at night creating a warmer, smaller occupied space that uses heat more efficiently, rather than losing heat to the entire tent size, which is great for cold weather camping. This type of tent can range from $100-$800.

Whichever tent you decide on for your family camping trip, just make sure it meets your needs. If you like to camp year round, be sure to get a tent that can handle all of the seasons. If you camp where it is wet, look for a tent that is made to protect you from the rain. If you camp with pets, be sure that your tent is made of a material that can withstand the extra wear and tear. Also, remember to check the inside specs. Does the tent have enough pockets for your use? Enough windows? Are there enough hang loops for hanging lanterns and other items? Family camping can be even more fun when you have the right equipment.
