Enjoy Ohio Camping Along the 'Crooked River' of Cuyahoga Valley National Park



Located just a short distance from urban Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a world of its own. Named by Native Americans “the crooked river,” the Cuyahoga River winds through beautiful areas including deep forests, rolling hills and even open farmland. Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was established in 1974 in an effort to protect the natural beauty of the area. It was upgraded to the one and only National Park in in Ohio in 2000. This beautiful park has a lot to offer making it a wonderful Ohio camping destination.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park has four distinct seasons, which offers something for everyone. Winters are cold and sometimes snowy. Spring brings warmer temperatures and rain. Summer gets hot and humid and thunderstorms are common. Fall begins to cool down, making it a nice time to visit. Weather can be unpredictable any time of the year, so be prepared for anything. The park is open year round and there is no entrance fee.

Once you reach the park there are plenty of activities to choose from. You can get out and explore the park on hiking trails, biking trails, horse trails, or by the river in a kayak or canoe. There are also wonderful scenic drives and even a scenic train ride! The train runs 12 months of the year and offers a beautiful view of the park. There is also an audio tour, Voices in the Valley, which offers history of the park as well as many unique perspectives of those that have passed through the park in the past. Excursions leave from Akron Northside Station, Peninsula Depot and Rockside Station. Passengers must purchase an all day pass, which costs $15 for adults and $10 for children 3-12. There are many options for your ride, including a round trip through the park, as well as many explorer options that allow you to get off at various points to explore the park further outside of the train. With so many attractions, beautiful sights, and wildlife, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a terrific Ohio camping destination for just about everyone!
