Elk Island National Park is an excellent Alberta camping destination for campers of all levels and with all sorts of interests. This fenced in park is a safe haven for thousands of animals, including large herds of bison, elk and deer. Although no major predators have been in the park for many years, there has been recent evidence of a cougar family! Although the park doesn’t very much in elevation, there are plenty of wonderful hiking trails throughout the park. Astotin Lake is great for kayaking and canoeing during the summer. The park has plenty of opportunities for cross country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months. The Living Boardwalk is the shortest hike in the park, but it is an incredible one too. This trail follows Astotin Lake and a boardwalk extends out into the marsh at the southern end of the lake. Wildlife viewing and bird watching are popular past times when visiting the park, too.
