Gotta-Have Outdoor Tools

From the pages of Camping Life Magazine

Simple and effective—that’s the way a camp tool should be. We’ve collected our favorite new multi-tool, a camp axe that quickly can make logs into kindling, and a toothy folding saw to cut your way through tree limbs and branches. Here’s the list.

Columbia River Knife & Tool

A multi-tool with no more than necessary, but exactly what you need, the Zilla-Tool from Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) is part of the company’s I.D. Works products line. One of our favorite features is spring-loaded pliers that can be accessed without opening the tool. The Zilla-Tool’s pliers handle can be locked into the tool’s body for carry, then released for work with the flip of a thumb switch. Two screwdriver hex bits can be fitted in the end of the tool for use, or stored in the handle. The Zilla-Tool also accepts other standard hex bits. Its sharp end is a 3.0-inch spear-point high-carbon stainless steel blade with a combination straight and serrated blade. A finger “flipper” opens the blade quickly and acts as a blade guard when it’s open, and a stainless steel pocket clip and nylon carry sheath standard. The 7.4-ounce Zilla-Tool’s handle has a bead-blasted finish and is 6.5 inches long. MSRP: $45. CRKT: 800/891-3100; crkt.com.

Gerber Blades

A good axe is always good to have around in camp, and the Gerber Camp Axe is a simple, no-nonsense tool that is well balanced and weighted for clean and powerful impacts. A glass-filled nylon handle holds a forged stainless steel axe head honed to a razor-sharp cleaving blade with outstanding edge retention. The Gerber Camp Axe can make your firewood-chopping chores a breeze. MSRP: $67. Gerber Legendary Blades: 800/950-6161; gerbergear.com.

Kershaw Knives

Kershaw’s Folding Saw is compact and easily portable, but when opened with the press of a button on its handle, reveals a 7-inch Swedish steel blade with razor-sharp serrated teeth that are cut to saw effectively on both the push and pull strokes. The handle is made from Santoprene material that offers a good grip for hard work. Weighing 6.4 ounces, the Kershaw Folding Saw is 16 inches long when open for business. MSRP: $35. Kershaw Knives: 503/682-1966; kershawknives.com.
